          Dear Mr. Lumann,

Thank you for submitting your question to the History Hub.

Records relating to the 72 German Infantry Division during World War II might be part of the National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized (Record Group 242). The National Archives’ Captured German and Related Records on Microfilm, which are part of RG 242, include several series of German army records. You can find a list of these series here in the Military Records - Army section of the Captured German Records Microfilmed at Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Microfilm Publication T315 (Records of German Field Commands: Divisions), for example, may contain information about the 72 Infantry Division. You can find more information about this series here in the National Archives Catalog.

National Archives microfilm publications are available on microfilm or to be digitized and placed on a DVD for $125 per roll/disk (with a $10 surcharge for shipping outside the United States). If you know the Microfilm Publication number and roll number you would like to order, you may order online at http://www.archives.gov/shop/ and click on "Request & Order Reproductions Online." Select "microfilm," and continue your order from there.

Additionally, these records and their accompanying finding aids, indexes, and/or roll lists are available for use in our Microfilm Reading Room (Room 4050) at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland (Archives II). You can contact the Textual Reference Branch at archives2reference@nara.gov if you have questions about the collection or about ordering reproductions.

Finally, the original documents have all been returned to Germany. For German military information you may wish to contact the Bundesarchiv Abt. VI - Militärarchiv, Wiesentalstraße 10, 79115 Freiburg, Germany. Also, German Army, Air Force, and Waffen-SS Paybooks (Soldbücher), Service Record Books (Wehrpaesse), Basic Military Record Books (Wehstammbücher), and Health Books (Gesundheitsbuecher) were returned to the Federal Republic of Germany by the Department of the Army through the US High Commissioner for Germany during 1953 and 1954.  For access to these records, please contact the Deutsche Dienstelle (WASt), Postfach 51 06 57, D-13400 Berlin, Germany.

Thank you, again, for sharing your question with the History Hub, and best of luck in your continued research.
