Hi Lawrence,
We're a little unclear about what information you're requesting.
Are you looking for sources for additional research or correction? Do you want to verify that a citation's formatting in the third edition is correct? Is there a citation missing and you're seeking one? If the latter, we can't be certain the citation will be credible since we do not know the book's content.
We have cables from the State Department in Bogota as late as 1944 on microfilm. These were the easiest to verify records but there are others. Further searching will be more complex and take more time but before we continue we must better understand your question and its purpose.
Thank-you.

Lawrence Clayton Mar 14, 2017 9:44 AM (in response to Alex Champion)Alex,
I’m trying to find the correct citation to some cables during the Bogotazo from U. S. Embassy to Dept. of State which we included at the beginning of a chapter in the 2nd ed. of our textbook, A History of Modern Latin America by Lawrence A. Clayton and Michael Conniff. We are now finishing the 3rd. ed.—A New History of Modern Latin America-- which will be published by U Cal Press (and added Susan Gauss as co-author) and in checking footnotes we noticed that the cables were extracted/drawn/copied from a URL address, and, as so often happens, the URL address is now dead.
My only problem is I don’t have a 2nd ed. of the text available in my library, or what was saved of my library after a fire destroyed our home Jan. 9. I may have it in a storage unit where we put some salvaged stuff, but right now I am in our apt. where we are living during the building of our new home. Sorry, long story! Anyhow, I know the quotes are either at the beginning of Chapter 20 or 21 or 22 of the old 2nd ed. and in that edition we cite the URL. We’d like to be able to nail down a correct citation to be as absolutely accurate, and perhaps even helpful
for students reading the text.

1 person found this helpfulProfessor Clayton,
You say you do not have access to the cited text but do you have a dead URL? It may contain a unique identifier or some other information we can use to trace the text back to the source.
If that doesn't work, it would be helpful to know further information. Do you recall if the link was to a catalog record describing the source? Was it a link to digitized records from a record group or collection?

Let me find a cc of the 2nd. Ed. of the text and I’ll send you the citation. Thanks for helping me nail this down. I managed to save most of my library in the fire (library was downstairs in the basement and got plenty of smoke and water damage but the fire was upstairs) and it is now in a storage unit. I plan to visit the unit today or tomorrow and am pretty sure I have a copy of the 2nd. Ed.

Hi Lawrence,
If you know who sent the telegram or who it was sent to within the Dept of State, the telegram may be included in the individual's Official Personnel Folder (OPF). You can write to stl.archives@nara.gov to request a search for the OPF. Thanks!

Lawrence Clayton Mar 20, 2017 5:54 AM (in response to Cara Moore Lebonick)Thanks Cara. I don’t think I have who originated the cable, just that it was sent from the Embassy.
