Re: I'm trying to find public use photos of the Hillsboro Lighthouse and its Keepers. I have a few from the National Archives in DC, but don't know where else to look. Thanks

2 people found this helpfulA quick look at at the catalog doesn't show much but that doesn't mean NARA does not have pictures.
The best way to get a thoughtful answer is to e-mail the Still Pictures reference address: stillpix@nara.gov
This will put your request for information into a formal queue where they must respond to you within a period of time. Probably a few weeks.

Ralph Krugler Dec 21, 2016 6:11 AM (in response to Larry Shockley)Hi. Thanks for the response. I'm actually the historian-in-training with the HLPS. Probably should have mentioned that in my original post. Thanks again!

2 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Krugler,
I know you have reached out to us (National Archives at St. Louis) for civilian records. I just wanted to let you know that our records are archival and open to the public so you should feel free to use any of the copies of the documents you received from us and cite them as such. I can help you with citation information if you should need it. Good luck!
Best,

Ralph Krugler Dec 23, 2016 5:55 AM (in response to Cara Moore Lebonick)Thank you for reaching out! I wasn't expecting it so that makes it mean even more! Plus I was looking for someone knew for certain the format for correct citations.
Below are two examples of citations I have made. This first one is from the daily Keepers Log:
- Knight, T., (1927, January 4 - 7), Log Entry, RG 26, Hillsboro Inlet Keepers Log, National Archives.
The Primary Keeper who kept the Log, the date, Source, Location. _ I found this format online but don't know for sure if this is correct. Should I add Washington DC in there?
This next one is for an item pulled from the same Keeper's Personnel File.
- Knight T. to Beck, H. L., (1922, February 12), Service rendered, [Letter], Personnel File Knight, T., National Archives, St. Louis.
From Thomas Knight to H.L Beck, the date, the topic of the letter, source, location.
If these are incorrect please advise, as I want this to be completely correct. Thanks again!

1 person found this helpfulI am happy to help! Here is our official citations pamphlet. It has several examples for different types of documents cited.
No. 17: Citing Records in the National Archives | National Archives
Your citations are pretty close to how we have them. As a quick reference here is an example citation from one of our Official Personnel Folders (OPFs);
Fain, Sarah Lee, Official Personnel Folders- Department of Agriculture; Record Group 146: Records of the U.S. Civil Service Commission; National Archives, St. Louis, MO.
Best,
Cara
