Seeking military records of Edward Sommer/Gustav Lang

Was it common for German immigrants to go by an alias during U.S. military service (1895-1903)? I am trying to solve a family mystery. My great-great grandfather emigrated from Baden, Germany to what is now Pittsburgh, PA when he was a boy. He later served in the U.S. Navy from 1895-1903 (19-27 years old). I am trying to figure out why he went by Edward Jerry Sommer instead of his actual name, Gustav Lang, during his military service. His military pension papers have him listed by both names. Was this common during the late 1800s for German immigrants to go by more English sounding names? Any thoughts why he may have done this? Thank you for any help!
