Dear Tracy Stuart,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and before 1959 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. If there is any information requested by the form that you do not know, you may omit it or provide estimates (such as for dates), but the more information you provide, the easier it will be to locate the correct file if it survived the fire. Please note that the documents provided by Mr. Schneider include his service number and his discharge date. Please use this information when filling out the SF-180.
For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series titled Records of Divisions, 1917 - 1920 in the Records of the American Expeditionary Forces (World War I) (Record Group 120) that includes the 33rd Division. There may be records of the 108th Supply Train in Entry P 1241-33, Box 28. We also located Records of Supply Trains, 1917 - 1919 in Record Group 120 includes records of the 108th. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
Copies of most of the Army rosters from November 1912 - 1943 and morning reports for November 1, 1912 to 1959 are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL). There are also 5 record series (XC files) in Record Group 15 at the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL) that include claims files relating to World War I. For more information about these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov. When requisition his XC File, please include a copy of the index card provided by Mr. Schneider.
Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and RL-SL. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information. Also, NPRC will continue servicing requests ONLY associated with medical treatments, burials, homeless veterans seeking admittance to a homeless shelter, and those involving the VA Home Loan program. If your request is urgent, please see Emergency Requests and Deadlines. Please refrain from submitting non-emergency requests such as replacement medals, administrative corrections, or records research until NPRC returns to pre-COVID staffing levels. Please check archives.gov/veterans for updates to the NPRC operating hours and status. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We also located Confidential Cablegrams from the Adjutant General to General John J. Pershing, 1917 - 1919 in Record Group 120 that includes Cable Number 1401, General Headquarters, A. E. F., France, 27 May 1918. The 108th Supply Train is briefly mentioned on Image 2. Next, we located Photographs of American Military Activities, ca. 1918 - ca. 1981 in the Records of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer (Record Group 111) with the photograph NARROW GAUGE TRAIN WHICH connects Dirkirch with the nearby towns. Trucks of the 108th Supply Train, 33rd Division, in background. Train ordinarily makes three trips a day. This is the 12.30 P.M. run. Diekirch, Luxembourg. These records have been digitized and are available online through the Catalog.g
We searched online and located the 33rd Division: Summary of Operations in the World War, published by the American Battle Monuments Commission. This book is available online through the HathiTrust Digital Library. Next, we located the Army Heritage Center Foundation bibliography of sources for the 33 Division.
The U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center, 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013, has a large collection of published unit histories.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Dear Ms. Stuart,
Thank you for posting your followup request on History Hub!
While you may include his personal information when you submit your request for the unit records, please note that the unit records typically include little or no information about individuals, and would not be arranged by name. We generally recommend unit records when researching someone’s service because they provide information about activities of the unit as a whole. They also sometimes mention individuals in records such as general orders for awards.
Also, to expand on the disclaimer in our previous response, the research room at the National Archives in College Park, MD is currently closed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Prince George's County. Because RDT2 staff are currently teleworking, they may not be able to provide immediate access to the records. They will update their website when public health conditions improve and they are able to reopenWe hope this is helpful.
