Dear Ms. Bhagat,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series titled 17th Decennial Census Reference Materials, 1947 - 1954 in the Records of the Bureau of the Census ( Record Group 29) that includes Binder 36-C – Members of Armed Forces and U.S. Citizens Abroad. The name and rank of a few U.S. military personnel overseas are listed in correspondence. These records have been digitized and are available via the Catalog. Many of the lists have been tagged.
The Census Bureau entered into cooperative agreements with the U.S. Departments of Defense and State, and the Maritime Administration, to provide information on personnel and dependents under their authority. However, the information was collected for informational purposes only and most of it was not retained. Surviving census schedules exist for Canton [Kanton], Johnston, Midway, and Wake Islands that include U.S. military personnel and civilian contractors and their dependents.
For additional information about the 1950 Census, please review the NARA 1950 Census Records webpages. The 1950 Census will not be available until April, 1, 2022. Also, information is available on History Hub via the 1950 Census Blog Series.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
