    Seeking change of name petition

    Cindy Kim Newbie

I was naturalized on JUN 11,1993 at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. I was given a new name at the time. I was able to retrieve my lost Naturalization Certificate through USCIS.gov. However, I did not receive duplicate name change petition (judgment).  I wrote letters to the USCIS in NYC where I was naturalized, and didn't receive any response. I called Clerk's office at Southern District and she provided this website since they do not have old files. Could you please tell me where/whom I can contact for this type of request? Thank you in advance.

          Dear Ms. Kim,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Oath Ceremony Lists and Petitions for Name Change, 11/27/1991 - 8/30/1996 for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in the Records of District Courts of the United States (Record Group 21) that may include the document you are seeking. These records are arranged chronologically by date of ceremony, and the Petitions for Name Change are filed with the list of applicants sworn in at the oath ceremony. These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at New York (RE-NY) at newyork.archives@nara.gov for access to these records.

Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RE-NY.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

          We hope this is helpful.
