Hi Rachel -
This is a NARA generated number to keep track of the paperwork for why we are keeping or not keeping records.
NC1 is just a header.
015 stands for the Record Group, in this case the Department of Veteran Affairs.
76 stands for the fiscal year in which the schedule was written
21 stands for the number of schedules in that year (so this was the 21st)
That number stands for "Geographic Card File and Loan Management Folders." You can see the Disposition Authority here: NC1-015-76-21
If you have any other numbers you need to search, you can also do search for them here: Records Control Schedules (RCS). Included on this page is a key for the number of records control schedules/disposition authorities. The format has changed over the years so records brought to the archives earlier than others will have different looking disposition authorities.
Hope that answers all your questions!
Thank-you. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
