Seeking records of John Edward Davis

    John Knight Newbie

John Edward Davis was a Royal Navy officer between 1838 and his retirement in 1870. Among the ships he sailed on were HMS Beagle in 1834 and HMS Terror between 1839 and 1843. He retired in 1865 as a Captain and went on to work in the Naval Hydrographical office until 1870. He was an excellent artist and produced a number of pictures during his most important voyage to Antarctica in 1839 to 1843 under the leadership of Captain James Clark Ross.  Artists were very important during exploration voyages at this time as photography was unknown. He was born in Alverstoke /Gosport in Hampshire and joined the navy in about 1830. I am researching his life and career and any help would be appreciated.
