Seeking land records of Washington White

    Dawn Donegan Wayfarer

Seeking information on Washington White. He was an orphan Shawnee Indian who lived in Overland Park, KS until moving to Oklahoma to live on the reservation. He served in the Civil War. He was granted land in Overland Park, Kansas. I am looking for these land records.

            Dear Ms. Donegan,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) database for land patents and it provides two results for Washington White in Kansas between 1859 and 1860. One of these results is patent number KS4490__.332 for land granted to a Washington White near Overland Park, Kansas on December 28, 1859 under the May 10, 1854 treaty between the United States and the Shawnee tribe. The other is a military warrant, MW-0425-313, issued to a Washington White for land near Overland Park, Kansas on September 1, 1860. These records have been digitized and are available for review online.

We then searched the National Archives Catalog and located 15 series of or relating to the Lecompton (Kansas) Land Office, as well as 14 series of the succeeding Topeka (Kansas) Land Office, in the Records of the Bureau of Land Management (Record Group 49) that may include further records regarding Washington White circa 1860. A few of these records have been digitized and are available using the Catalog. For more information about the non-digitized records, please contact the reference unit listed in the records description. It should be either the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov or  the National Archives at Kansas City (RM-KC) at kansascity.archives@nara.gov.

Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1 and RM-KC.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

In addition, we suggest that you review the NARA Land Records website and the finding aid titled Research in the Land Entry Files of the General Land Office (Record Group 49) for more information.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
