Re: How can I find more information on my uncle?
Barry Disbrow Aug 17, 2016 2:42 PM (in response to Danny Thomas)1 person found this helpfulMy wife went to St Louis, Mo Archives and got plenty of info about our uncles who died in WWII. She says you have to go in person for military records prior to 1965.

Danny Thomas Aug 17, 2016 4:37 PM (in response to Barry Disbrow)If I may ask, how did she gather the information?
Did she do the research herself or have someone collect it for her in advance of her arrival?
Thanks

Barry Disbrow Aug 18, 2016 11:45 AM (in response to Danny Thomas)1 person found this helpfulShe researched herself for two days. You can either take pictures of the documents or bring a scanner, to make make getting copies easier and clearer.

Re: How can I find more information on my uncle?
Danny Thomas Aug 18, 2016 5:29 PM (in response to Barry Disbrow)I have a hand held scanner. St Louis is a hard days drive. I'd need to find out if they have anything in their files that would help trace his WWII experience from the beginning.

1 person found this helpfulThe location of military personnel records depends on the branch of service and when your uncle served. For military personnel records at the National Personnel Records Center, you do not need to go in person -- you can submit a Standard Form 180 to request the records. Information on how to request veterans' service records on our website at: https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/. Hope this helps!

Danny Thomas Aug 17, 2016 5:21 PM (in response to Megan Dwyre)1 person found this helpfulI did this over a year ago and sent a reminder follow up over a month ago.
My uncle was with the 301st Bomb Group (H) 419th Bomber Squadron.
A few years ago, I submitted a request to the NPRC on my Dad. It took about 9 months. I'm sure they are overwhelmed with requests.

Amanda Dotson Aug 18, 2016 12:26 PM (in response to Danny Thomas)1 person found this helpfulIf you know where his permanent address was at the time the war ended, look at the county courthouse for a copy of his discharge papers. This would have his service number on it, which is required to request the personnel record. They will also tell you where he was stationed and service start and ending dates.

Re: How can I find more information on my uncle?
Danny Thomas Aug 18, 2016 3:44 PM (in response to Amanda Dotson)My uncle, John A Thomas, died in a bombing run over Vienna 13 Feb 45. I have his service number from the MACR 12110 and A/C # 44-6653. I found all this in Fold3.

Vernon O'Neil Aug 19, 2016 9:59 AM (in response to Danny Thomas)1 person found this helpfulOh yeah they have these reports that are different from the service records of guys who died, casulty files or something. Last I heard though all the army ones weren't at the archives yet just the Marines and Navy but that St. Louis archives location would be better to answer more detailed.
