Where was the USS TICONDEROGA in July 1964?

My father in-law was on the ship until July 10, 1964 and has clear memories of supporting operations in Viet Nam, but the 'official record' of the ship's locations during that deployment have been very hard to find.

          Dear Mr. Nelson,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941 - 1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the deck logs of the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) for 1964, to include Ticonderoga (CVA-14) - July 1964. These deck logs have been digitized and can be viewed online through the Catalog. Please note that the Catalog does not always list logs in chronological order.  When viewing logs for each month, you may wish to click on the red PDF icon under the “Documents” heading. This will allow you to view the entire month’s logs as a single file. Once you have done so, you may use the blue download button to download the PDF.  Due to the size of the files involved, it may take a little while for them to load in full. Please be patient.  If you have any problems accessing these files, please email Catalog@nara.gov.

Additionally, we located the Muster Rolls and Personnel Diaries of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1949 - 12/31/1971 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that may include the muster rolls of the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14). Muster rolls do not include information about ship location or missions, but may be used to verify the dates that a sailor was on a ship. While some of these records have been digitized and are available for viewing using the Catalog, the muster rolls for the Ticonderoga are not yet available online. For more information about the non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov

Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

A brief history of the Ticonderoga IV (CV-14) is available in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships from the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). Additionally, NHHC has Vietnam War Command History Reports for USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14), Oct. 1963 - Sep. 1964. NHHC may have additional records concerning the USS Ticonderoga’s activities during this time period. Please contact them at archives@navy.mil to request information.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
