Will Individual Deceased Personnel Files (IDPFs) be available online?

    Roberta Russo Adventurer

I understand that Individual Deceased Personnel Files (IDPFs) are in the process of being transferred from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Ft. Knox KY to the NPRC at St. Louis.  Last I heard, NPRC had already received IDPFs for names beginning A thru L. I believe that all IDPFs are in the process of being digitalized.  Question - will the digitalized IDPFs be made available on-line through the NARA's website - or will researchers have to request them individually from the NPRC and pay for each separate file?

          Dear Ms. Russo,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

At this time, Individual Deceased Personnel Files (IDPFs) from 1940-1976 for U.S. Army personnel with surnames that begin with A-L are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL), not the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). For more information about these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov. RL-SL has not yet received digital images for these files; however, they can be scanned individually as they are requested. If you order one of these files, RL-SL will provide digital copies of the record via OneHub and charge the fee via Pay.gov. Please do not submit a Standard Form 180 to NPRC for IDPFs as they do not handle these requests.

Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RL-SL.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

To request copies of the IDPFs from 1940-1976 of personnel with surnames that begin with M-Z, please write to U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Casualty & Memorial Affairs Operations Division, ATTN: AHRC-PDC, 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue, Department 450, Fort Knox, KY 40122-5405. They are being scanned by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) in order to properly identify remains of those still listed as missing.

The long term goal is to receive the digital images of all the 1940-1976 IDPFs from DPAA and upload them to the National Archives Catalog after they are screened and redacted for privacy purposes; however, at this time there is no projected date for when this will be completed.

          We hope this is helpful.
