What companies or entrepreneurs survived the depression?

    Sean Mulroney Newbie

During the Depression there are some figures and companies who come out of the economic struggle positioned to be in a better fiscal position while others were severely crippled. So during the "Dust Bowl," were there any individuals or companies who came out of the struggle in a better position?

          Dear Mr. Mulroney,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We suggest that you use the National Archives Catalog to review the many records in our holdings that relate to the Great Depression and to the Dust Bowl. If you are interested in a particular individual or company, you may search for them by name in the Catalog. Plus, you may use the Advanced Search feature to narrow your results by type of record, time period, and more, and you may search within a specific record group as well. For example, you may wish to review records that are part of the Records of the National Recovery Administration (Record Group 9), the Records of the Civilian Conservation Corps (Record Group 35), the Records of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) (Record Group 69), or the Records of the Public Works Administration (Record Group 135). You also may narrow your search results by the National Archives location where the records are held, such as the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Some of the records have been digitized and are available online using the Catalog. Please contact the National Archives reference unit listed in each Catalog description for more information about those particular records. In addition, we suggest that you review NARA’s Great Depression and New Deal website.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from various NARA reference units. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

Next, we searched WorldCat and located numerous resources related to the Great Depression and entrepreneurs that may be of interest to you. Please contact your local public library for further assistance with these and similar resources.

Finally, the Library of Congress Chronicling America website is useful for searching historical newspapers about the Depression or the Dust Bowl.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
