    steven Topp Newbie

I am looking for Army Records pertaining to two deaths at the US Army Ranger School in 1977. The soldiers died while in the Swamp Phase of Ranger School.

          Dear Mr. Topp,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the Access to Archival Databases (AAD) and located the series "Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) Public Use File" in the Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Record Group 330) that may include a listing for these soldiers.

We searched the National Archives Catalog but were unable to locate any records of the US Army Ranger School during 1977. School records still may be in the legal custody of the Army.  To inquire about the status of these records, please contact Joyce Luton, Director, Records Management Directorate, 9301 Chapek Road, Building 1458, Fort Belvoir, VA  22060.  The telephone number is (571) 515-0213.  The email address is joyce.luton2.civ@mail.mil.  If the records are in the process of being transferred to NARA custody, please request the accession or transfer numbers and the box numbers.

The information you seek may be contained in their Individual Deceased Personnel Files (IDPF).  IDPFs dated after 1976 are in the legal custody of the Army. For the exact location of these files, please write to U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Casualty & Memorial Affairs Operations Division, ATTN: AHRC-PDC, 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue, Department 450, Fort Knox, KY 40122-5405.

Depending on the circumstances of the death, there may have been a court martial of the responsible parties. U.S. Army general courts-martial records after 1976 are in the custody of the Army. For access to these records, please contact the Office of Clerk of Court, U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals, ATTN: JALS-CCZ, 9275 Gunston Road, Building 1450, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060-5546.
