Seeking records about Litvak Emmigrant Smuggling

In researching some Jewish ancestors many emigrated from the Russian "Pale of Settlement" between 1890 to 1910. Many sources indicate that most of these would have been would have been thought the use of a smuggler as Jewish emigration at that time was not allowed in all but a few unique circumstances. Is there a source of oral histories or other resources that describe the "smuggling" process and experience. Also the experience of getting from the Russian border to a ship and then to America? I have read an account in Sholem Aleichem's Motl the Cantor's Son, but that is fiction. I am interested in some first person sources.
