Re: Comprehensive list of names given to American Aircraft in World War II?

Alan,
I don't know if there is a comprehensive list by aircraft type--usually one has to look in books dedicated to a specific aircraft where the AAC/AAF serial/ Navy Bureau number is listed along with the relevant contract, production block, and fate. I've seen that for postwar aircraft like the U-2 and A-12/SR-71. However, there are some books dedicated to aircraft nose art, such as Jeff Ethell's The History of Aircraft Nose Art , Wallace Foreman's B-24 Nose Art Name Directory, and John Campbell's Talisman that does associate photos with AAC/AAF serial. You can also check Schiffer Publications catalog--they have a ton of books dedicated to specific aircraft types that may have the listings you are looking for. I just don't think anyone has taken on such a huge task for all WWII aircraft--mainly because there are so many authors' biases towards their favorite.

Thanks for these ideas. Yes, I imagine that would be a huge undertaking, but a fun one!

mlbc Apr 28, 2017 11:34 AM (in response to alanwalker)This website previews 4 books that I suppose are novels, but one names two aircraft that will both be named “Government Girl.” One was an Army P-51 Mustang and the other a Navy F4U1 Chance Vought Corsair. I have seen websites that focus one one type of aircraft, such as PB4Y, but I have not needed info on these 2 so do not have a source to recommend. Again, this was found in a novel and may lead you nowhere.

Thanks, Martha! Since my original query I found out quite a bit about the "Government Girl" airplanes. And an interesting National Archives connection to them. I'll post it here shortly.
