          Dear Mr. Guettier,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

You may wish to request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and medical records of enlisted men of the U.S. Navy who were separated from the service after 1885 and before 1959 are located at NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002.  To request these records, please mail a completed GSA Standard Form 180 to NPRC.  The information provided below includes everything you need to know to fill out the form. There is a reproduction fee associated with ordering OMPFs.  Please work with your parents or other guardians should you desire to request his OMPF. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NPRC will continue servicing requests ONLY associated with medical treatments, burials, homeless veterans seeking admittance to a homeless shelter, and those involving the VA Home Loan program. Please refrain from submitting non-emergency requests such as replacement medals, administrative corrections, or records research until NPRC returns to pre-COVID staffing levels.  Please check archives.gov/veterans for updates to the NPRC operating hours and status. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Muster Rolls of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1939 - 1/1/1949 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the muster rolls of the USS San Diego (CL-53). From the muster rolls we were able to determine the following information about SJ Bolecz.

          • Full Name (as listed in muster rolls): Steve Joseph Bolecz
          • Service number: 650-08-40
          • Date of Enlistment: 17 December 1941
          • Place of Enlistment: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
          • Home Address: 631 Hayes Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

In addition, using the muster rolls we identified the following key dates regarding his service on the USS San Diego.

          • On 10 January 1942, he transferred to the USS San Diego from the Naval Training Station (NTS), Newport, Road Island. At the time he was an Apprentice Seaman (AS).
          • On 28 April 1942, he was promoted to the Seaman 2nd Class (Sea2c)
          • On 1 March 1944, he was promoted to Seaman 1st Class (S1c).
          • On 1 June 1944, he was promoted to the Coxswain (Cox).
          • By December 1944, he was listed as a Temporary Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class (BM2c(T)).
          • On 1 June, 1945, he was promoted to Boatswain's Mate 1st Class (BM1c).
          • On 13 September 1945, he transferred to Receiving Ship, San Francisco, California, (RS SF CAL) pending separation from the Navy.

We also located World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories, ca. 1/1/1942 - ca. 6/1/1946 in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38) that contains war diaries and reports concerning the USS San Diego’s activities during World War 2. These records have been digitized and can be viewed online through the Catalog.  Please keep in mind that the Catalog does not always list files in chronological order.

Additionally, we located the Draft Registration Cards for Pennsylvania, 10/16/1940 - 3/31/1947 in the Records of the Selective Service System (Record Group 147) that includes a draft registration card for him. We are attaching an image of the card to the end of our reply.

Next, we located Population Schedules for the 1930 Census in the Records of the Bureau of the Census (Record Group 29) that lists the following information about him.

Finally, we searched the website of the Naval History and Heritage Command and located an article about San Diego II (CL-53). Also, the unofficial website NavSource has a page on the USS San Diego.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
