"You Will be Pleasantly Surprised in Mackinaw City if You Visit Wawatam Inn Vine Harding Mackinaw City Michigan UP TO DATE GARAGE RUNNING WATER AND ELECTRIC LIGHTS BATHING BOATING FISHING TENNIS"
This ad appeared in a 1918 Automobile Blue Book from 1918. I would assume that Vine Harding built the inn. From newspapers from the area he seemed to be selling a lot of real estate. Also see for more about Vine Harding & Wawatam on pages 74-76 The Straits of Mackinac - Google Books
Dear Ms. Harding,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
According to the bibliography of the book to which you refer, GSM stands for “Gazeteer of the State of Michigan.” The citation also indicates that the GSM was published irregularly from 1838 to 1932, but was renamed the “Michigan State Gazeteer” in 1873. Also the Mackinaw News has an article that mentions Vine Harding and the sale of plots (see page 8).
We suggest that you contact the Cheboygan County Clerk of Court and the Register of Deeds for more information about Vine Harding and the Wawatam Beach resort.
We hope this is helpful.
