          Patricia,

Here is some information he is listed on the muster rolls as died 9/5/1777 please see his name near the bottom of the second page. Also make sure you use the scroll bar to slide over to see death information. However it may look like he died 8/1777 but maybe a different Mason from Massachusetts.

            Hi Patricia,

            Welcome to History Hub,

Found your Samuel Mason's Family Tree on familysearch.org. Family Search is a free website, you just need to register and then come back and click on the following to see your family tree. While searching your tree I also discovered that I am related by way of Samuels wife Hopestill Martin, very interesting since her tree goes way back to the 1600's

                Dear Ms. Mason,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War in the War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records (Record Group 93) that include a service record of Mason, Samuel - Massachusetts - Tenth Regiment. These records have been digitized and are available using the Catalog. Given that the date of death you provided is different from the one in the record, it may not be for the same person. We did not locate any additional records for soldiers named Samuel Mason serving in Massachusetts units.

Please note that these records were not created during the Revolutionary War, but were created by the Department of War starting in the 1890s from extant records among its files in an attempt to create substitutes for records destroyed by fires in 1800 and 1814. Because the Department was not able to reconstruct every record, a soldier may have fought in a Continental Army unit during the war, but there may not be a compiled military service record for him. For more information about these records, please email the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at archives1reference@nara.gov.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

The Compiled Service Records include a limited number of records relating to state military units, however most members of state militias are not referenced in the records. If he served in a Massachusetts unit, the Massachusetts Archives Division may have additional records.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
