Seeking muster roll of US Naval Base in Pembrokeshire

    Nija Dalal-Small Newbie

How would I go about finding out the names of service members stationed at the US Naval Base in Pembrokeshire, Wales (near RAF Brawdy) in the late 1970s and early 1980s? I have just learned the facility was called "United States Naval Facility (USNF) Brawdy"

          Dear Ms. Dalal-Small,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Personnel Diaries and Muster Rolls, 1/1/1972 - 1/31/1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that may include microfilm copies of the muster rolls for United States Naval Facility (USNF) Brawdy. A number of images may be illegible due to the poor quality of the microfilm that was transferred to NARA by the Department of the Navy.  The original paper records were destroyed by the Navy after filming. For more information about these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov. Please note that the Muster rolls/Personnel Diaries for 1972-1983 utilize social security numbers as service numbers and are subject to privacy restrictions.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

Navy personnel diaries (also known as muster rolls) after 1983 are in the custody of the Navy Personnel Command (PERS-00J6), 5720 Integrity Drive, Millington, TN 38055.  These provide a listing of anyone who reported on-board each day, anyone who left, anyone who did not report, and anyone who reenlisted.  They also include copies of the Officer Distribution Control Report (ODCR) and the Enlisted Distribution Verification Report (EDVR).  Individuals are listed by name, rank/rate and social security number.  Muster rolls/Personnel Diaries from 1984 onward utilize social security numbers as service numbers and are subject to privacy restrictions. Please see https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/References/FOIA/ for information about submitting requests for these records.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
