Re: What kind of information is present in the NA about US troops in WW1 in Belgium?

3 people found this helpfulThere are many records in the National Archives regarding WWI and Belgium in our Catalog at https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=Belgium%20AND%20%22World%20War%20I%22. This only scratches the surface. One Record Group (RG) is specifically about the US Troop involvement in WWI (RG 120) and you can look through these records at https://catalog.archives.gov/id/449. What specific information are you seeking about US Troops and WWI?

bombsaway May 24, 2016 5:58 AM (in response to Rebecca Collier)Hello Becky,
Thank you for your reply. I wanted to know what kind of information there would be about the Battle of Passchendaele in the Archives. I know there were Canadian troops, but I would like to know if there are aerial photo’s or maps present or other information.
I am looking forward to your reply and if you have any questions for me just let me know.

2 people found this helpfulSince American troops were not involved in the battle, there is limited information in our records (see https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=Passchendaele&rows=20&tabType=all&facet=true&facet.fields=oldScope,level,materialsType,fileFormat,locationIds,dateRangeFacet&highlight=true in NARA's Catalog). NARA's Cartographic Branch may have custody of aerial photographs and maps. Their email address is carto@nara.gov. Since Canadian, Australian, and British troops fought in this battle, if you haven't already, we suggest you contact the Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, ON K1A 0N4, Canada (web site is http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index.html); the National Archives of Australia, P.O. Box 7425, Canberra Business Centre, ACT 2610, Australia (web site is http://www.naa.gov.au/); and the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1 6HZ, England (web site is http://www.iwm.org.uk/).

In addition to Becky's suggestions, here is one more.
You might try looking at the National Archives in the U.K. They have several extensive guides for World War I records which can be found here: Research Guides First World War. The guide that might be of best use is the Military Maps of the First World War. Additionally, I did a search through their catalog for Passchendaele and came up with several results - a majority of which are photographs. If you find something that might be of interested, the National Archives (U.K.) can be contacted via this form.
I hope this gives you a good jumping off point.
