Dear Ms. Demars,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
When embarking on Native American genealogy, please note that the records in the custody of NARA often only detail those living on the reservations or being administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Since your ancestors remained rather than being part of the Cherokee Removal, they did not have any interaction with the United States Government and they will not be recorded in NARA’s records. Therefore, tracing their genealogy may be difficult.
If they stayed in Virginia, we suggest contacting the Wolf Creek Cherokee Tribe in Virginia for assistance. If not, we suggest reviewing the FamilySearch website Cherokee Nation for additional guidance on researching your ancestors.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
