Do you know the number of the MP unit? If you know the unit, we have unit records here at Archives II in College Park, MD and can let you know if there are unit records available.

Thanks for your reply! My Uncle’s discharge papers indicate that he was attached to 53rd Military Police Company. From March 1945 to November 1945, he served with the 68312 PW administration as an interpreter. Any references you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Eleanor,
We checked the World War II unit records (Entry 427) in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 407), but they only had records for the 53rd Military Police Co. through 1944. We did locate a records processing worksheet (also called the "ORB Processing Worksheet") which lists the unit's locations:
N. Africa, 1 December 1943 to 17 December 1943Italy, 28 December 1943 to 5 September 1944
France, 10 September 1944 to 27 February 1946
Germany, 28 February 1946 to 20 January 1947
We searched the other series of unit records, which are located in the Records of the U.S. Army Operational, Tactical and Support Organizations (WWII and Thereafter) (Record Group 338), but we weren't able to locate any additional records for the unit in that series.

Eleanor Boyne Apr 28, 2016 5:54 AM (in response to Megan Dwyre)Hello Megan!
Thanks for your thorough search of the records. Disappointing not to find the records I wanted. Do you know if there are any records maintained specifically on US Army POW camps for Germans in Europe? That might be another tangent to follow.

I can't think of any records related to POW camps in France that are searchable by camp or by unit.

1 person found this helpfulDo you know if he served as an interpreter in a Civilian capacity? The National Archives at St Louis have Project J and Civilian Internment records that may be useful, if so. You can email the information that you have on your Uncle (name, dob, etc) to stl.archives@nara.gov and we can conduct a search. Thanks!

Eleanor Boyne Apr 14, 2016 2:21 PM (in response to Cara Moore Lebonick)My Uncle was a private in the Army. He was a naturalized US citizen who was born in Germany; thus the language capability.
