Thanks for your question. All tags, transcriptions and comments become searchable by the Catalog and can be found within search results within about a day of their contribution by Citizen Archivist. You can read about a Citizen Archivist transcription mission and how to search the transcriptions in our newsletter from 2018, Transcriptions Reveal Life in the Trenches.
Transcription and tagging projects can have dual uses. They are always used to increase searchability in the Catalog, but they can be used for other projects as well. From a Citizen Archivist tagging mission where over 18,000 photographs were tagged from a list of topical subject tags, the tags were used to create The Bureau of Indian Affairs Photographs Finding Aid. You can read all about it in our December 2020 newsletter - Bureau of Indian Affairs Photographs Finding Aid
