The info I gave is incorrect. I gave the incorrect DOD with the wrong relative. I'm looking for the obits for ....
Thomas H Thorp DOD April 23, 1863 Boston and
Henry Thorp DOD March 18, 1820 also in Boston
Hello and thanks for your question for History Hub,
The National Archives holds federal records of federal agencies. We do not hold newspaper obituaries. We also do not hold death certificates which are state records.
That said, a quick search for Thomas and Henry Thorp of Boston produced two findings on Ancestry.com, notices from the Town and Vital Records. If you are strictly looking for obituaries from as early as 1820, you may have to find what newspapers existed at that time and find out if it is digitized, if it's on-line or where it is archivally stored.
Henry Thorp, b. abt 1776, d. 16 March 1820, Boston, Massachusetts, age 54
Thomas Thorp, b. 1796, d. 23 Apr 1863, Boston, Massachusetts, about age 67
I hope this helps with your research. If we can help you further, let us know.
Dear Kathleen Thorpe,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
While the National Archives does not hold obituaries, we are able to suggest resources where you may be able to find them. Depending on where the person lived, local newspaper publications are probably the best place to start. Usually your local library is a good place to check for newspapers, (either original copies or microfilmed), or they may have access to online resources like newspaper archival websites. The Boston Herald was founded in 1846, so they might be worth checking for Thomas H Thorp. Additionally, you can check the Boston Public Library or with the Massachusetts Historical Society, which is located in Boston.
You may wish to search Ancestry in their Newspapers.com Obituary Index 1800s-current. There may be a fee for using Ancestry. Instead, please check for access at your local library as many library systems subscribe to these sites, making them free for their patrons.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
