Dear Ms. Allen,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
You may wish to explore the National Archives’ websites for African American History and Resources for Genealogists and Family Historians for information about records held at the National Archives that might be relevant to your research, and you can use the National Archives Catalog to search for federal records, as well. For example, there are numerous records related to Virginia in the Records of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (Record Group 105) that may be of interest to you. Some of these records have been digitized and can be viewed online in the Catalog. Please contact the National Archives reference unit listed in each individual Catalog entry for assistance with those records.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from a NARA reference unit. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
In addition, FamilySearch offers an online guide to African American Resources for Virginia and one to Charlotte County, Virginia Genealogy that may also contain some helpful information or resources.
Plus, the Library of Virginia has an online guide to AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH that may be useful, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture also provides an online Guide to African American Manuscripts. You may wish to contact these or similar organizations in Virginia to see if they can offer you any additional assistance.
We hope this information is helpful, and best of luck with your research!
