Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
If you’re trying to find more information about his service you may want to request his Official Military Personnel Files from the National Personnel Records Center. Note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NPRC has been closed and only completing emergency requests. As of March 8, 2021, the NPRC entered into a phased expansion of our onsite workforce. They are continuing to increase their on-site staffing and are servicing requests associated with medical treatments, burials, and homeless veterans seeking admittance to a homeless shelter. For that reason you want to refrain from submitting non-emergency requests until they return to pre-COVID staffing levels. You can check archives.gov/veterans for updates to the NPRC operating hours and status. We apologize for any inconvenience.
In the meantime, I would suggest doing some research on Ancestry and Family Search. NARA has partnered with these groups to help digitize and make available quite a few of the WWII records. Family Search does not require a subscription and can be accessed with a free account. Ancestry does require a subscription, but many public libraries offer free access with your library card. We looked up Herman Lee Boatman on Ancestry and found quite a few listings including his U.S., Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010 that lists his enlistment dates as November 18, 1955 to August 16, 1957. While these searches can take some time, you should be able to find some records on him.
We hope this information is helpful.
