The National Archives at New York City is the repository for federal documents considered permanently valuable. Since the 1855 census is a state record, we don’t have that in our custody. We do have the federal censuses which occurred every 10 years. We do see a listing for William Dolson in Orange County going back to 1820.
You can find these censuses on Ancestry and FamilySearch. Ancestry does require a subscription, but many public libraries offer free access with your library card. Sites such as Ancestry and FamilySearch also have great resources from the county and state such as birth, marriage, and death records. There’s a fantastic page of genealogy resources for Orange County NY.
We hope this information is helpful.
