3 people found this helpful"Shooting butts" are three-sided structures filled with sand, into which the guns of aircraft are fired in order to harmonize them for a specific shooting distance. You might wish to contact the National Archives' Cartographic unit at carto@nara.gov for more information about how to research this structure on Army Air Forces maps for the World War II period.
