          Dear Richard Becker,

Thank you for posting your request to History Hub!

The National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) has custody of the Records of the United States Forces in Southeast Asia, 1950-1975 (Record Group 472) for U.S. Army units.  These records consist mostly of unit organizational histories, after action reports, unit daily staff journals, and general orders.  The files are arranged by unit, and identification of the unit is necessary before a search can be conducted.  They do not include personnel or medical information. We do not have a name index to these records.

As a public health precaution due to COVID-19, all National Archives research rooms nationwide, including those at Presidential Libraries, are closed to the public until further notice. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

One online Vietnam War research database is the Virtual Vietnam Archive, the digitization project of the Vietnam Center & Sam Johnson Vietnam Archive (VNCA) at Texas Tech University. We have extensive holdings of Vietnam War related materials, and currently have over 900,000 individual items (totaling 10 million pages) digitized and available for online research, including some unit records and a full set of U.S. Army 1:50000 maps. Since VNCA relies on donations of materials, we have only a small portion of what is available at NARA II in RG 472: Records of the United States Forces in Southeast Asia, 1950-1975. However, we may have just what you need, so it is worth checking!

Online documents include copies of many of the After Action Reports held at NARA II. To research our digitized AARs you can either go directly to a specific search for an operation name or unit OR to begin with a general search, use this search term set:      "after action" aar  (= 16,657 Search Results).

Then use the Filter Results options (to the left) to view a search subset by media type or year OR enter a narrower search term in the Filter Results field, such as an operation name (  "chattahoochie swamp"   or    malheur  )  or a unit designation  (  "198th LIB" "198th infantry" "198th brigade"  -- NOTE: variations are necessary in order to match document descriptions for the highest number of search results).

There is also a built-in Thesaurus of era terms to find related terms to expand your research results.

To quickly find an item again, keep track of the Item Number or copy the Permalink (on the More Info page of the item record).

It is recommended to also do a general search (i.e., not limited to AARs) for the operation name or unit for that date range, as other documents such as operation orders, patrol reports, situation reports or newspaper articles, may provide additional details or images relevant to your research.
