Dear Mr. Kowalick,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
The Air Capital Drop Zone, a member of the United States Parachute Association, has a webpage discussing the evolution of sport skydiving. The Wisconsin Skydiving Center, also a member of the USPA, lists significant dates in the history of the sport on their website here. Another member of the USPA, Skydive Hollister has a brief overview of the sport’s history with some discussion of the equipment specifically.
We located a self-published memoir that may be of interest. It is by a man named Dick Fortenberry who was an early member of the Golden Knights (the U.S. Army aerial demonstration team) and discusses his experiences as a soldier and sport skydiver in the 1950s and 1960s.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
