Dear Serge Bielanko,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that include a file unit titled Regimental and Company Books of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. For more information about the non-digitized records, please email the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at email@example.com.
For a guide to conducting Civil War research with the National Archives, visit our Civil War Records: Basic Research Sources page. This provides information on compiling a soldier’s history, using the Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR), Pension Files, and “record of events.”
For both Union and Confederate volunteer units raised by states, there may be additional information in the custody of the relevant state archives. Also, the staff of some Civil War related museums and U.S. state historical societies and museums may be able to assist you with your research.
If you are unable to visit the National Archives at Washington, DC Textual Reference (RDT1), you may hire a private researcher to do research for you. A list of private researchers who are familiar with National Archives facilities is available on NARA’s website at https://www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/index.html.
However, as a public health precaution due to COVID-19, all National Archives research rooms nationwide, including those at Presidential Libraries, are closed to the public until further notice. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
Thank you so very much. I really appreciate your efforts here and I’m hopeful this might lead me towards some information I haven’t come across yet.
Thanks a lot. These are great! I really appreciate your time and effort.
