Pics/videos of comfort women in WWII

    Aimee Cho Newbie

I'm a reporter with NBC4 in DC and am working on a story about comfort women in WWII. I'm looking for pics/videos of them and am having trouble finding any. This article seems to indicate some video exists: https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/kindle/2017-07/11/content_30070698.htm. Any help folks could provide is much appreciated!

          Dear Ms. Cho,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

While it is possible the video mentioned in the article was found at NARA, without having any citation information or a NARA film identification number we cannot verify this fact, nor can we confirm its potential rights or usage status. If possible, I would reach out to the researchers mentioned in the article to see if more specific information can be provided, such as a Local Idenitifer number.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and have located two films from the Records of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer 1860 - 1985 (RG 111) that researchers in the past have claimed to include comfort women, although the description associated with the films states Chinese women. The first film, 111-ADC-9706, may be the video referenced in the article, but again you would need to confirm with the researcher making these claims. The second is 111-ADC-2738. For more information about the motion picture holdings of the National Archives, please email mopix@nara.gov.

Photographs of various U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps activities dating from 1940 to 2007 are in the custody of the National Archives at College Park - Still Picture (RDSS). Please contact RDSS via email at stillpix@nara.gov and the website is https://www.archives.gov/dc-metro/college-park/photographs-dc.html.

As a public health precaution due to COVID-19, all National Archives research rooms nationwide, including those at Presidential Libraries, are closed to the public until further notice. Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

            Dear Ms. Cho,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We found additional information in the series Unit Histories, 1943-1967 in the Records of U.S. Army Operational, Tactical, and Support Organizations (World War II and Thereafter) (Record Group 338) that includes the file Headquarters, 164th Signal Photo Company: Historical Photos [2 folders], which may be relevant to your research. These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov for access to and information about these records.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDSM, RDSS, and RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We hope this information is helpful, and best of luck with your research!
