Howdy Julie:
From personal experience I can tell you that it's very hit-or-miss, when it comes to that info being in a service record. If there was a widow and children, you'll want to consider trying to determine if the widow ever filed for a pension. Was his service Union or Confederate?

jgeisler Feb 9, 2016 2:35 PM (in response to stlreb)Hi Michael,
Thank you for the reply. Great great grandfather Merit Hopkins was in the 15th Regiment, Iowa Infantry and had just signed up for his 2nd enlistment on 1 Jan 1864. He died on 5 Mar 1864 and his wife filed for pension on 5 May 1864 in Van Buren, Iowa, with one dependent child. Lots of papers in Fold3 and Ancestry.com but no burial information. I also found US Registers of Death of Volunteers 1861-1865 where he died in the Regional Hosp of "Inflam. of lungs" Vicksburg, MS. Another brother Milton is buried in Pittsburg Cemetery,Pittsburg, Van Buren, Iowa and a 3rd brother Milon died in Kingston, NC on 7 Apr 1865, no burial information listed anywhere for him either. All 3 brothers were in the 15th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Co. "E" Sad story for this family.

Indeed, a sad story. Have been able to access the actual cemetery records for Pittsburg Cemetery, or any of the other older cemeteries in that county?

jgeisler Feb 10, 2016 8:18 PM (in response to stlreb)One brother is buried in Pittsburg Cemetery in Pittsburg, Iowa. I have picture of stone from Find a Grave. Unfortunately, the stone is broken and laying on the ground. Don't know if it is from vandalism or age.

Okay. I would start by accessing the actual cemetery records from Pittsburg Cemetery, on the hunch that the other two boys MIGHT be buried there and the graves currently have no markers. It can be rather difficult to get records for older, rural cemeteries such as that one. Quite often, they've been lost over the years. Check with the local libraries, genie societies, and funeral homes. Someone will know who the current caretaker is, and that person will (hopefully) have the burial records. Once you've exhausted that possible source, and have done the same for the other graveyards in that area, please post again, and we can expand our efforts a bit, if necessary. Good luck!
