Dear John Shock,
Thank you for your question on History Hub!
The best place for you to start your search is on the National Archives website’s page, The American Revolution. There you can find the various kinds of records where a soldier’s name might appear, as well as the different databases and search engines you can use to look up their name. There are links to the National Archives catalog as well as Ancestry, Family Search, and Fold3. Try different sites to see which of their search functions are easiest for you to use. I recommend casting a "wide net" and search those series like Pension Records due to the sheer amount of records.
Here's another interesting bit; a blog from the Archivist of the United States on the subject. https://aotus.blogs.archives.gov/2010/09/10/was-your-ancestor-a-revolutionary-war-spy/
For more information about these records, please contact National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at Archives1reference@nara.gov.
We wish you all the best with your research!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

I found a Branardus Van Zandt who was in the New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. Also found a John Van Zandt also from the same New Jersey Militia Regiment. Also found a George Van Zant in the Pennsylvania Regiment which may or may not be related but I can see how in those days Van Zandt could have been spelled Van Zant instead. Remember most people were illiterate in those days unless coming from a prominent wealthy family.
