Dear Ms. McAdoo,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Records Regarding Prisoners of War, 1945-1949 in the Records of the Office of the Judge Advocate General (Navy) (Record Group 125) that contains--as Mr. Schneider noted--the files George H. Henshaw, Diary, 1946 and the file George H. Henshaw, Diary, 1947 in box 2 of the series. These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at email@example.com for access to and information about these records.
Next, we located the series Select Subject Files Relating to Investigations of Alleged Treasonable Utterances by Mark Lewis Streeter Released Under the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Disclosure Acts, 1945-1951 in the General Records of the Department of Justice (Record Group 60) that contains--as Mr. Schneider noted--the file Henshaw, George H and 2 files related to Bunka that might be of interest to you. These records have not been digitized. You may contact RDT2 with any questions you might have about them.
Plus, we located the series Far East Name Index to the Series "Case Files, 1944-1949" in the Records of the Judge Advocate General (Army) (Record Group 153) that contains 3 cards for Henshaw, George on images 254-256. The index has been digitized and is available online via the Catalog. Two of the case files referenced on the index cards are located in the series Case Files, 1944-1949 in Record Group 153; records related to Case File 33-190 are located in box 604, and records related to Case File 35-1050 are located in box 765. Records related to Case File 102-15E are located in box 6 of the series Set-Up Files, 1944-1949 in Record Group 153. These records have not been digitized. Please contact RDT2 for assistance with them.
Finally, the prisoner of war (POW) record that Mr. Schneider shared is part of the Access to Archival Databases series World War II Prisoners of the Japanese Data Files, created, 4/2005 - 10/2007, documenting the period ca. 1941 - ca. 1945 in the Records of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (Collection ADBC) that includes 1 record for Henshaw, George Herbert.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
Thank you Rachel - this is very helpful! I will contact them. I understand the diary is about 200 pages long, so don't think anyone at the Achieves can copy for me, but I'll give it a try.
Sure hope things improve enough that they can open back up! Between what you and Elliot shared there is much for me to check out!
Thank you again!!
