Seeking departing & arriving passenger lists for New York City

    Joyce Casper Newbie

I will be searching the nearest NARA facility when they are open soon.  The archival description I want is:  Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels and Airplanes Departing from New York, New York, 1/1/1957 - 11/27/1982 From RG 85. The date I will search is April 5, 1970 and Icelandic Airlines. Will I be able to see the whole passenger list? I cannot find a corresponding data set possibly titled:  Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels and Airplanes Arriving at New York, New York.  Does that set exist for the same year? Thank you.

          Dear Ms. Casper,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

In addition to the series that you mentioned, we searched the National Archives Catalog and located 6 series in the Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (Record Group 85) regarding arrivals and departures from New York, New York for the timeframe you seek.  For access to these series, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

The airline passenger and crew manifests for the series you mention contain the aircraft identification, captain's name, and dates and airports of departure and arrival. For each alien or citizen passenger, the record usually provides the person's name; citizenship; U.S. address; passport, visa, or other immigration document number; and may note the person's date and place of birth, destination, and baggage details. For each crew member, the record usually provides the person's name; position on the airplane; citizenship; passport, visa, or other immigration document number; and may note age and gender.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
