    Seeking military records from NPRC

    Bernard M. Kessler Newbie

Has anyone had any luck in getting military records from the NPRC here in St. Louis lately? I sent in a couple of inquiries back in October 2020 and have yet to hear. Is there any information about when they might get caught up? Thanks

The NPRC has only been doing emergency work since March 2020 when the building shut down (burials and medical emergency stuff). They're not doing things like archival or medals requests.

Their latest press release says they're going into Phase One, but it'll probably be a long while before they get the huge backlog down. Here's the press release:

            Dear Mr. Kessler,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Unfortunately, there is no estimate as to when the NPRC might get caught up on the requests. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your request from the NPRC. The NPRC will continue servicing requests ONLY associated with medical treatments, burials, and homeless veterans seeking admittance to a homeless shelter. Please check archives.gov/veterans for updates to the NPRC operating hours and status.

We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
