    Seeking copies of war reports

    Tom Boyer Wayfarer

Recognizing the COVID closure impacts, can I order copies of submarine war patrol reports from the National Archives? They are available on Fold3 but of poor quality and extremely difficult to download.

          Dear Mr. Boyer,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located U.S. Submarine War Patrol Reports, 1941 - 1945 and in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38). Many of these scans are also available through the Catalog. To search for records of specific submarines, click on the blue “Search within this series” button and then enter the name of the submarine in the search box. Please keep in mind that the Catalog does not always list files in chronological order.

The original records were reproduced on Microform Publication M1752, which was then digitized by Fold3 through a partnership between NARA and Fold3. These are the best copies available and are provided to researchers in part to prevent handling of fragile originals which are generally no more legible than the copies. Therefore, we do not offer reproduction services for these records, even if it were not for the fact that the National Archives has suspended reproduction and digitization services until further notice due to COVID-19.

Some patrols reports are also available online through the record series World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories, ca. 1/1/1942 - ca. 6/1/1946 in Record Group 38. These copies may or may not be better than the ones in the previous series.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
