    Seeking Enlisted & Officer Promotion lists - post WWII

      I often get a request for promotion lists (I am the archivist at Stars and Stripes) and would like to be able to direct people to an archival resource to access promotion lists (both enlisted and officer) from the past 6-7 decades, as our paper published them off and on (more off than on). Most often get questions on Army and Air Force promotion lists, but would appreciate resources for all branches. Thank you kindly.

          Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!


          We searched the National Archives Catalog and located 4 series of records in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917 - 1985 (Record Group 407) that include promotion lists for the Army. We als located the Subject Files, 1948 - 1982 in the Records of Headquarters U.S. Air Force (Air Staff) (Record Group 341) that include promotion lists for the Air Force. For more information about these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov.


          In October 1974, the Army Standard Installation Division Personnel System (SIDPERS) included Personnel Data Cards (PDC) that replaced Morning Reports and Zero Strength Balance Reports (ZSBR) that replaced rosters. A SIDPERS contains information on the service member during the entire period of time assigned to an organization, regardless of length of time. It also includes information about TDY, AWOL, DEF, gains, losses, promotions, reductions. SIDPERS was discontinued on November 21, 1990. For a copy of a SIDPERS record, please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and it mail to NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002. Please include the individual's name, Social Security Number, complete organization and location, and the date the individual left the unit.

          For the more recent promotion lists, we suggest that you contact the Human Resources offices of the Army, Navy, Air Forces and Marines.
