Dear Mr. Forman,
Thank you for posting your request on the History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Log Indexes, 1918 - 1941 in the Records of the U.S. Maritime Commission (Record Group 178) that may include the ship(s) you seek. This series is the index to the series Merchant Marine Ships' Logs, 1918 - 1941 in the Records of the U.S. Maritime Commission (Record Group 178) that consists of deck logs maintained by various U.S. flag merchant vessels operating around the world. Included are logs for the chief officer, engineer, deck departments, and engine room. For more information, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Merchant vessel logbooks (which may include crew lists) also are stored in a NARA Regional Archives facility closest to each port of entry of the particular merchant vessel. For information about the logbooks you are seeking, you will need to locate the names of each merchant vessel and their port of entry. This will aid in determining which regional archives facility has custody of the crew lists you seek.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and various other NARA reference units. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
