Dear Mr. Brokaw,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you contact the archives of the ship line to obtain a confirmed image of the SS Italia that you seek or search the unofficial website Pictures of Passenger Ships
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
There was more than one ship by the name.
According to the website TheShipsList.com, I believe the ITALIA you want was with the Hamburg-America Line. The following info is from that website.
The ship was built in 1889, so it was a new ship when your family sailed. In 1900, it was sold to R. Sloman, and renamed MILANO.
In 1903, it was sold to the Deutsche Levante Line and renamed TENEDOS.
In 1914, it was laid up at Constantinople, then placed in Turkish sea transport division Osmanli Seyrisefain Idaresi, Istanbul. In 1915, it was sunk by British submarine off Akbash.
You could try searching any of the 3 names for photos, postcards, posters, newspaper articles, etc. Also try searching Hamburg-America Lines and Deutsche Levante Line. The companies might have archives that may able to assist you, as well.
Thank you so much!
