Dear Mr. Fleck,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
The predecessors to the current Explosive Ordnance Disposal units were involved with Mine and Bomb Disposal as part of the Mine Warfare Subsection. We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Studies, Reports, and Other Records, 1942 - 1947; General Correspondence, 1942 - 1949; and Dispatches, 1943 - 1948 in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38) that relate to the Mine Warfare Subsection. We also located World War II Action and Operational Reports, 12/7/1941 - 1946; World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories, ca. 1/1/1942 - ca. 6/1/1946; and Korean War Diaries, 1950 - 1955 in Record Group 38 that may contain records of Mine Explosive units. For more information about these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at Archives2reference@nara.gov.
Photographs of various U.S. Navy activities dating from 1940 to 2007 are in the custody of the National Archives at College Park - Still Picture (RDSS). Please contact RDSS via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and RDSS. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
Finally, we suggest that you contact the Naval History and Heritage Command and the Center for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving for assistance, particularly in regards to records from the Korean War era through the present. Plus, you may wish to contact the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
