Where are deck logs after 1978 located?

My father was in the Navy in the 1980s and served on various ships.

NARA has not yet accessioned the deck logs from 1978 and later, although we are coordinating that action with the Naval History and Heritage Command.  The Navy elected to microfilm the 1978 and later deck logs and to destroy the originals in an effort to save storage space.  However, this action may have co-mingled classified and unclassified logs.  The Navy has to perform a declassification review on all of the logs in order to ensure that the classified logs are properly handled, and declassification review of microfilmed documents is a long and tedious process.

Deck logs for naval vessels after 1978 are not in the custody of the National Archives and Records administration.

For information about U.S. Navy deck logs dated after 1978, please write to the Ships Deck Logs Section, Naval History & Heritage Command, 805 Kidder Breese Street, SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC 20374-5060.
