          Hi Linda,

A name alone is not enough information to allow help efforts as names are essentially never "unique".

A best guess of birth year is always needed. A best guess of birth state is also nearly always needed. Knowing where a person lived during their life is very helpful and is especially useful if the birth year and state guesses are inaccurate.

The first steps in finding information about a person usually focuses on Federal census records and so having information about where a person was during the census years (every 10 years, ending in "0", currently the most recent census publicly available is 1940) are most useful.

It is also helpful identifying the person in records when names of close family members are provided, for instance a spouse, child or children, or parents.
