Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Susannah Brooks Jan 30, 2021 3:13 PM (in response to Natalie Glines)All of the occupations on the list are in English, not German; but that does not help me figure out what the occupation is. If it was a skilled occupation, then he might have continued working in that trade in the US. # 10 & 14 on the passenger list have the same occupation. I think the first word starts St___ and second word is Cutter. There is another person on the list, whose occupation is stone cutter, but the first word is definitely different than for your ancestor.

Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Natalie Glines Jan 31, 2021 2:00 AM (in response to Susannah Brooks)Thanks! Not stone cutter, got it. Some type of laborer fits what he did the rest of his life.
That first letter of the second word does look like C, as it kinda matches the C in Clara on the same page.

Alice Lane Jan 30, 2021 7:51 PM (in response to Natalie Glines)Hi Natalie
Welcome to History Hub
I believe the first word in your post for his occupation is (Hosp) short for hospital.
This Oskar sold surgical supplies in 1930 and 1940 census

Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Natalie Glines Jan 31, 2021 1:56 AM (in response to Alice Lane)Hi, thanks for the help! It does look like Hosp. Seller.
The birth year is off, so I don't think it's that Oskar. 1834 vs 1890.
I believe it might be Oscar Robert Schmidt, though he was a Laborer/Harness Maker throughout his life. The immigration and birth years match what's on the 1900 Census I was working off of.

Alice Lane Jan 31, 2021 5:49 PM (in response to Natalie Glines)Hi Natalie,
It would be less difficult to search for Oskar if perhaps you could give his wife and children's names and
any place that they may have lived. Was he born in Germany? What year did he immigrate or naturalize?
Thank you

Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Natalie Glines Jan 31, 2021 7:12 PM (in response to Alice Lane)Hi! I could start at the beginning ~
I am working on Mary Schmidt and trying to figure out her parents. She married Timothy McGinness in West Hoboken on 5 Sep 1886, and was born Feb 1865 (1900 Census) or 1867 (all other Census records for her). I ordered a photocopy of Mary Schmidt's marriage certificate back in December and it's been a long time to wait, so I figured I can explore the possible parents ahead of time to be ready when I get the result. IF I get the result.
The key information I have is that her father is born in Germany and her mother is born in Ireland.
Just based on the 1900 Census for Mary Schmidt, she was born Feb 1865. Oscar of Germany and Bridget of Ireland could fit since their daughter Mary Schmidt was born 5 Jan 1864 in West Hoboken. Or Christian Schmidt and Maria Dacey could fit since their daughter Maria Schmidt was born 1 Jan 1865 in Jersey City. I still want to know if Christian and Maria are from Germany/Ireland.
As for Oscar's immigration record... The Census says he's Oscar Robert Schmidt or Robert Oscar Schmidt from Saxony who immigrated in 1852 (his 1900 Census). The immigration record I shared is from 1852. That's all I have to go on there, his name, and that date.
________________
My goal is [a] to find records from Christian Schmidt and Maria Dacey to see if they're German/Irish, [b] to find the immigration records of Mary Schmidt's parents, no matter who they were.
There is another person on Ancestry who is a descendent of Mary Schmidt and Timothy McGinness, and it would be great to help her as I help myself.

marriage of Christian and Maria son Michael ? The last name is written as Smith and when transcribed they really messed up all of names.
Mariae Dacey in entry for Michaelem Smith, "New Jersey Marriages, 1678-1985" — FamilySearch.org
Well you can check these out, I we will see what else we can find.
Here's your harness maker in the 1900 census under the name Robert Schmidt, wife Bridget.

Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Natalie Glines Jan 31, 2021 9:25 PM (in response to Alice Lane)That son Michael record is totally new to me!
I'm going to try and search for any Census records with Christian and Maria... want to see if they're German/Irish. For some reason, it's not coming up on Ancestry. Maybe the names are messed up a bit.

Dear Ms. Glines,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
In addition to the information from the previous posters, we suggest you review Listing Of Some Early Occupations for occupation suggestions for the census abbreviations.
If you are unable to obtain the parentage of Mary Schmidt from your marriage certificate request, we suggest that you search the New Jersey State Archives searchable databases , the New Jersey Births and Christenings, 1660-1980, and review the FamilySearch Research wiki for New Jersey Vital Records.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Re: Seeking to identify Oskar Schmidt's occupation
Natalie Glines Feb 1, 2021 7:30 PM (in response to Natalie Glines)Ok so I am certain now that this is the correct parent. Knowing he's a harness maker, strap cutter does make sense. Thanks for all your help.
