Seeking records related to the RAD or Reich Labour Service

    Brian Paul Kaess Wayfarer

Hello, My grandfather, Paul Ernst Kaess (1921-2002), was a member of the Reich Labour Service or RAD from March 17 1940 until June 10 1940. Does NARA have personnel records of the RAD in any of its captured German Military Records, or elsewhere? Thanks

          Brian,

Might want to try this Records Group (RG 242). But looks like this is from 1947-1958 and your looking for early 1940s

          Record Group 242:

National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized, 1675 - 1958

          Series:
          Intelligence Card Catalog, 1947? - 1958?

          File Unit:
          RAD

            Dear Mr. Kaess,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

The National Archives may have some records relating to the Reich Labour Service [Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD)] in the National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized (Record Group 242) among the microfilmed records of the Berlin Document Center (BDC) within the Berlin Document Center Library Material (Microfilm Publication T611) or Miscellaneous Collections (Microfilm Publication A3345). We also searched the National Archives Catalog and located 6 series in various record groups that pertain to the Reich Labour Service or Reichsarbeitsdienst. However, these records would most likely not be considered personnel records. For access to these microfilmed records and the 6 series, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We would suggest that you contact the German Bundesarchiv, specifically their Department PA (Personenbezogene Auskünfte) in Berlin-Reinickendorf as they provide information on former members of the Army, the Reichsmarine, the Kriegsmarine, and the Air Force; civil servants, employees, and workers of the Wehrmacht; and members of the male and female retinue. For more information, please visit their website.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
