FAQ FAQs for using Login.gov with History Hub

Am I required to use Login.gov with History Hub?

  • No. Login.gov is optional for History Hub users.  It provides a more secure two-factor authentication method but is not required.
  • History Hub members who also access the National Archives Catalog may find it more convenient to use the same Login.gov account for both systems.

Do I need to create a new History Hub account to use Login.gov?

  • No. You can use the same email address used on History Hub when creating your login.gov account. Your new Login.gov account will link to your existing History Hub account by matching the email address. (Double check that you have access to that email address. )

What to expect:

  • Login.gov uses two-factor authentication. You can set up a second authentication method of your choice when you create an account. The most secure options recommended are mobile authentication apps, USB keys, or PIV/CAC cards (for federal or military employees).
  • You may be able to sign in to other participating federal sites and apps that use Login.gov that are available to you.

What is two-factor authentication?

  • Login.gov uses two-factor authentication as an added layer of protection to secure your most sensitive information. Two-factor authentication requires you to use “something you know”, like a password, as your first authentication method and “something you have” as the second authentication method, such as a code, or card to access your account.
