Seeking Ration Tickets of Red Cloud Agency/Pine Ridge Reservation

As part of my research, I am trying to locate the Ration Tickets of the Red Cloud Agency / Pine Ridge Reservation, between the years 1877 and 1930. Could anyone advise me (1) where exactly I can find these records, and (2) how do I view them online? I would appreciate the support even more.

  • I have found much valued information at the National Archives, especially the Kansas City Branch where with gloves you can touch the actual documents. However I have a suggestion until you have the time and means to make your visit. Take a look at a book by Tom Buecker and Eli Paul titled, The Crazy Horse Surrender Ledger.   This is a reprint of the actual ledger record book containing 200 pages with the first entry date of November 8, 1876. The day after Crazy Horse surrendered a clerk for the Red Cloud Agency recorded 899 in his band. This ledger contains several other Sioux bands along with the Northern Cheyennes and Arapahoes who came in to the agency in the early spring of 1877. You will find Census, Head of Households by name and their family members by number of male and females, also Head of Household for ration tickets. So if noting else this information may be able to place your ancestor at the Red Cloud Agency in 1876-1877.

The Nebraska Historical Society in Lincoln, Neb would be happy to copy pages for a $ or you can purchase the book from them as well or look on line for other sources that sell books. The ledger book contains an appendix for the people of the Red Cloud Agency at that time which I would be happy to check to make sure your ancestor is listed. Happy hunting, Sherrie Mumm
